My friends,
I know this BLOG is meant to talk about MySQL. And those who know me are aware that I do it with the utmost care and respect for the reader. But I’d like to ask your permission to vent and make a statement.
I also know we’re the country of football. I know that. I’m not a Corinthians fan (is that how it’s spelled?). I was giving a Performance Tuning class when Corinthians rightfully and honorably won the Libertadores. I’m a São Paulo FC fan. I made fun of the Corinthians fans in class (what an awful name), but deep down, I was rooting for Corinthians, who at that moment were representing Brazil — even though some were cheering against them. I wasn’t. I’m Brazilian, with a capital B. I would never root for another country.
But, football-wise, Brazil as a national team and confederation is a fraud. A disgrace.
So, we are the country of Volleyball and UFC. Yes, dear reader, UFC. We are unbeatable, indestructible. We are the UFC nation. No other country — not even the one where the sport/league originated — can match Brazil’s achievements.
Chael “Big Donkey” Sonnen “awakened my most primitive instincts.” He offended me in such a way that I feel compelled to use this space dedicated to MySQL to get this thorn out of my throat.
He insulted Brazil, Brazilians, our champion, and his family. The guy clearly enjoys being hated. I don’t think this loudmouth represents the USA well, much less its people. In fact, I highly doubt his views reflect the general opinion Americans have of our country.
I always say Brazil is not yet a nation — it’s a country with a project to become one. We have many structural and situational problems: rampant, deep-rooted, shameless corruption; the “Gerson’s Law” syndrome (for the younger ones, it’s that terrible habit we Brazilians have of trying to take advantage in everything); urban violence that claims lives every day; social inequality (which truly disgusts me); drug trafficking — a whole array of issues.

But despite all that, Brazil (and Brazilians) have virtues. I’ve never seen a Brazilian speak rudely about another country. Family is off-limits.
I don’t know if I speak only for myself, but I believe that loudmouth Chael “Big Donkey” Sonnen managed to offend and be hated by 190 million Brazilians — and many more around the world, including in the US.
I was raised by a grandfather-father (grandfather with a capital G), who took on the responsibility of being my dad. My grandfather, a man of modest means and even less formal education, is still active to this day (07/08/2012), at the age of 88, working as a barber. Grandpa, forgive the teasing, but you were a barber by trade — and a driver too (Not even Grandpa gets off the hook).
I say this to show that I didn’t have a wealthy childhood. But it was rich in other ways. I stole plenty of guavas and avocados from Mr. Félix. Played in the MUD, yes — and I loved it. And playing in the MUD was important in shaping who I am today.
I’m not ashamed of my origins — and neither should our champion Spider be.
If that loudmouth Chael Sonnen thinks it was somehow superior to play with Barbie & Ken, while we Brazilians played in the mud… he’s mistaken. Brazil today is one of the five largest world powers, and having done our homework, we are on the rise. Unlike his country.
What Anderson Silva tried to explain to Chael Sonnen — and what the latter didn’t understand — is:
“We got balls!”
We have grit, and we never give up.
As Anderson “Spider” Silva said the fight would go, in his own words:
“Boom boom boom boom, finish.”
(I’m going to regret this)
Go Corinthians! Go Spider! Go Brazil!
Brazil, the country of UFC.
