I have never agreed that lawyers should be addressed as “doctor,” because, in fact, they are not. Also, it cannot be said that they are mere bachelors! They are bachelors. And that is no small thing. All of us who have completed higher education (or a third level degree) should be proud of it. But it seems that for lawyers, this is not enough!
Well, they are not doctors: lawyers, dentists, doctors, and others who have completed undergraduate degrees (or bachelor’s degrees) and who have passed any qualification exam and/or affiliation with any professional body (CRM, CREMESP, OAB, etc.).
A doctor is someone who has defended a doctoral thesis. Calling doctors, dentists, and lawyers “DOCTORS” should be prohibited by law. Because it is disrespectful to those who have truly dedicated themselves to doctoral studies.
It would be a way for certain professions, by calling themselves doctors, to put themselves at an advantage over the “non-doctors.”
Reading the article by Prof. Dr. Marco Antonio Ribeiro Tura (a real doctor), this becomes very clear. I recommend everyone read it through this link: http://www.jusbrasil.com.br/noticias/1682209/doutor-e-quem-faz-doutorado.
Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Marco (who deserves to be treated accordingly) explains that the title of Doctor, erroneously and connotatively adopted by lawyers, dates back to the Empire era.
Would it not be ideological falsehood to claim the title of doctor without holding a doctorate? I will consult a good lawyer, and I will start calling myself Doctor too! Note: I do not have a doctorate, and MBA or MBI degrees do not grant me this title.
By the way, it is extracted from the article by the noble and learned Professor Marco that nobody can demand to be addressed as doctor, even if they have a doctorate.
