1st MySQL Forum in Brazil (2010)
MySQL

On December 8, 2010, the 1st MySQL Forum in Brazil took place in São Paulo. It was a half-day event—yes, that’s true. But it was the first event 100% dedicated to MySQL, independent of larger conferences such as SunTech Days and Oracle Open World Brazil.

The event was held at the Renaissance Hotel on Alameda Santos, just one block from Avenida Paulista—a location that needs no further comment. An excellent hotel, easily accessible by public or private transport.

First of all, I want to mention the names of those responsible for organizing the event: Marcelo Souza and Mathew Pitre. I also want to thank my friends Kyle Parrish, Pedro Andrade, Rich Nigro, Manuel Contreras, Henrique Leandro, and Wagner Bianchi, who contributed significantly to making this event happen and came to Brazil to support it. These are the guys I believe in and trust will take MySQL to a new level throughout Latin America. I want to express my sincere thanks to all of you for this great initiative. And I hope to see an even bigger event in 2011!

Of course, I must also thank my great friend Edson Tavares (from Ricardo Eletro) for sharing some of his experiences with MySQL. And I want to thank the 178 guests I personally invited, who showed up in force. Thank you all for coming!

In total, the event had over 300 participants—an impressive number, especially considering it was organized and held in just 10 days.

MySQL

Alright! I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t voice a little criticism! In my opinion, there could have been more time and a clearer separation between technical and managerial content. But honestly, what am I complaining about? It was the first event!

The main focus of the event was on availability and scalability, and MySQL is a killer in that area.

I’m truly happy to have made my modest contribution to this event. The foundation stone has been laid! Now we hope for a bigger and better event in 2011. And if it’s up to the people mentioned above, I have no doubt it will happen.

Thank you to everyone who made this event possible. For me, someone who has lived and breathed MySQL for so long, it was a joy to take part in an event like this in Brazil.
