MariaDB is a derivative work of MySQL v5.1. Unlike MySQL, which is a registered trademark of Sun/Oracle, MariaDB was created and is maintained by Michael “Monty” Widenius, the creator of MySQL, along with a group of programmers who worked on MySQL’s development.
