Monty in Brazil

Since nobody is made of iron… Our dear Monty, creator of MySQL® and MariaDB, was in Brazil in February 2010 to rest, enjoy the Rio Carnival, and, of course, to discuss the future of MySQL® and MariaDB.

Personally, it is always a pleasure for me to talk with Monty. Being the main evangelist of MySQL® in Brazil since 1999, it is always a unique occasion to be with the creator of the world’s most popular open source database. It’s an unparalleled learning experience. Monty is always very polite, attentive, approachable, and ready to teach us.

We talked at length about MariaDB: official training, certification, roadmap, compatibility between MySQL® and MariaDB, performance, documentation, and specialized support at levels L1/L2 and L3.

Compatibility between MariaDB and MySQL®: It will always be ensured. Migration from MySQL® to MariaDB is simple: just download MariaDB, unzip it, stop the MySQL® mysqld service, and start the MariaDB mysqld service. That’s right—since MariaDB is a derivative work of MySQL®, most of the services (servers), clients, and utilities that come with the MySQL® distribution have the same names.

Official Training and Certification: Monty Program, the company created by Monty to develop MariaDB, together with HTI Consultoria e Tecnologia, are developing high-level official training as well as a certification program. And the news is: we will have material in Brazilian Portuguese.

Roadmap: Unlike MySQL®, which is surrounded by uncertainties despite Oracle’s commitment not to discontinue the product, MariaDB has a constant improvement program. And best of all, there is no plan and never will be a plan to sell MariaDB to the end user. MariaDB will always be free and open. There is also stricter control regarding the source distributions released to users.

Performance: MariaDB is faster and more stable than MySQL®. The goal is to remain a leader. Most programmers who truly understand the MySQL® source code and operation left Sun Microsystems. Many of these programmers are now working on MariaDB, without restrictions or ties. The result is improved and higher-performing source code.

Documentation: Online documentation for MariaDB is planned for the second half of 2010, including in Brazilian Portuguese, with contributions from me and HTI Consultoria e Tecnologia.

L1/L2 and L3 Support: MariaDB is free and open source. However, companies that want greater security, superior service, and closer contact with the creators can purchase Support Packs. These support packs cover all needs of MySQL® and MariaDB users. The Support Pack can be compared to MySQL Enterprise®, but with support in Portuguese at all levels of complexity—from the simplest to the most specialized service. Including bug fixes and source code customization.

Monty emphasized the importance of Brazil for MariaDB. HTI Consultoria e Tecnologia was chosen as the MariaDB point of presence in Brazil, due to its engagement with MySQL® for more than 10 years.

The first MariaDB and MySQL® Conference in Brazil is confirmed for the second half of 2010. Some schedule details remain to be finalized, but Monty assured me of his presence.
