Running a MySQL server on an iPhone or iPad doesn’t make much sense—although it’s technically possible. On the other hand, running a client to access a remote server? That makes a lot more sense. Why?
There are many reasons! Running a specific maintenance task… A simple REPAIR TABLE
could be the difference between staying comfortably in your movie seat or sprinting out to your office or the nearest internet connection. Right?
Then there are the addicts and paranoiacs out there who might want to access a query, report, or stats… Who knows—there’s a type for everything.
At that point, the most important thing is that it’s possible to run client apps that really make life easier when that kind of need pops up. With that in mind, I tested a flood of apps, both useful and totally useless.
I didn’t like iMy at all. Despite its amazing interface, it has one major flaw: it keeps crashing! It feels like there’s some memory management issue between the app and the iPhone/iPad. More complex SELECT
queries just freeze the app.
The one I liked most was DBTracklayer. Unlike most of its competitors, it’s FREE. That’s right—free! When something is good and free, we naturally get suspicious, right? Fair. But before publishing this article, I took the time to use it for over a month. And I approved it.
Sure, the interface could be a bit more polished, but it’s effective. What really won me over is that it comes with a bunch of pre-written commands—tons of handy “SHOW” options! Another great point: it’s the only one clearly made for DBAs (probably by DBAs). It includes features that really help with database administration.
Out of all the iOS MySQL client apps I tested, this was the only one that worked on iPhone 3GS, iPod, and iPad without any issues.

Some of the features I loved:
- A list of pre-written admin commands: global/session variables, global/session status, flush, log access, and more
- Simplified creation and management of procedures, functions, events, and triggers
- Easy management of databases, tables, columns, indexes, and views
- Query window for DCL/DDL/DML commands with convenient command input
- A list of commands, functions, and operators
Conclusion: If you need a mobile client app that’s fast, efficient, and won’t crash when you need it most, DBTracklayer is the app you’re looking for.
It’s worth visiting the developer’s website at http://www.db-tracklayer.com/ before downloading it from the store.AppStore.
