It seems this is not just gossip or buzz. Reading various articles about databases and operating systems from different parts of the world, there is unanimity that Red Hat is replacing MySQL with MariaDB in its repositories.
For those just arriving and not yet familiar with MariaDB, it is a “fork” of MySQL, which basically uses the same source code. In other words, it is 100% compatible with MySQL and is maintained by the team of MySQL’s original creator: Monty Widenius.
Obviously, projects orbiting around the Red Hat system, such as Fedora and CentOS, have followed the same path, removing MySQL from their official repositories (so to speak).
Is this good or bad? As a Tai Chi practitioner, nothing is absolutely good or bad. Everything has a Yin and Yang side.
On one hand, there is certainly a bit of “pettiness” from Red Hat, which is “pissed off” with Oracle Linux. Certainly. That is also clear. Red Hat is not acting “nice” at all. Surely, they are not thinking about the millions of users of Red Hat-like systems. I was part of the Fedora project and community in its early days, so I know what I’m talking about.

Now, on the other hand, the smooth talk Red Hat has been distributing in the specialized press has a good chance to stick. It goes roughly like this: Replacing MySQL with MariaDB brings independence to the community and users of MySQL/MariaDB, who now follow a path of independence from Oracle, regardless of what direction Oracle takes MySQL.
Seriously? Sounds like talk from a corrupt politician!!!
I personally like Monty a lot, and there are competent people taking care of MariaDB. But so far Oracle has been surprising me with the corporate face it has given MySQL.
Both MySQL and MariaDB are excellent options in terms of corporate databases. Red Hat has every right to put whatever it wants in its repository. They just should have a more attentive communications area regarding what they distribute to the specialized media.
